Why I Believe with Dale Van Atta
The “Why I Believe” fireside this month will be held on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at 6:00 PM in the Washington DC Temple Visitors Center. We will feature testimonies of Jesus Christ from author Dale Van Atta.
Dale Van Atta, author and investigative reporter, grew up in a Navy family and joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints while attending Brigham Young University as a non-member. During his time at BYU, he was editor of the student newspaper, The Daily Universe, and became friends with the new BYU president, Dallin H. Oaks. In 1979, Dale moved his family to Northern Virginia to co-author the world’s most widely syndicated newspaper column with Jack Anderson, also a Church member.
Dale lives in Ashburn, Virginia, with his wife of 51 years, Lynne, and has served in many church callings, including as a ward mission leader, Elder’s Quorum president, and long-time youth Sunday School teacher. The Van Attas have three children: Tara, Dylan, and Kate, and five grandchildren. Dale’s most recent book is The Washington DC Temple: Divine By Design, published in 2022.
